Simon judge of Israel, feared for his unmatched strength was chasing a Philistine scout when the echo of a lion’s growl diverted him. In a clearing, he saw a young shepherd boy fending off a massive lion with nothing but a staff and sling. Without hesitation, Simon joined the fight. Together, they took down not one, but two lions that day.
Thus began a bond between Simon and the boy Dave.
Simon, strong yet reckless, led Israel in war. Dave, young but wise, worshipped in song and silence. But while men cheered for Simon, God looked deeper. The judge’s heart had wandered too far his lust, his pride, his disregard for God's laws. The Lord was grieved. So, in secret, God chose another. Through the prophet Enoch, Dave was anointed king, though the crown would come later.
Dave and Simon became brothers in battle, slaying Philistines and defending their people. But where Dave knelt to pray, Simon wandered to forbidden cities, including one called Sorek where lived Tamar, a beautiful woman grieving the death of her cousin, who had fallen to Dave's sling.
Inconsolable, Tamar plotted revenge. At first, Tamar drew near to Dave, but he was not swayed by her charm. He kept his distance, focused on God's voice.
When Dave resisted her, she changed course targeting his friend, Simon, to strike Dave where it hurt: at the heart of his brotherhood.
Tamar began to question Simon, flatter him, make him feel invincible. But behind her smile was betrayal. Each time he lied to her about the source his strength, she relayed the lies to the Philistines. They tested him, failed, and pressed her harder. Finally, desperate and weary, Tamar coaxed the truth from Simon's lips: his strength lay in the hair tied to his vow with God.
Unknown to her, Tamar was being watched.
The Philistine lords had long grown tired of Simon's victories. They saw in Tamar a tool. They whispered promises: “Get close to him. Find his weakness. End his story.”
That night, while he slept with his head on her lap, she cut his hair. Outside, the Philistines waited. Inside, Simon's strength faded. They stormed in, blinded him, chained him, and dragged him to Gaza. The judge of Israel was now a prisoner.
When Dave heard, his heart broke not just for Simon fall, but for the betrayal. He had warned him, and yet, the enemy still struck.
In captivity, Simon repented. His eyes were gone, but now he saw God more clearly than ever before. And in the temple of Dagon, mocked by his enemies, he asked God for one last strength. Pushing the great pillars apart, Simon brought the temple crashing down, ending his life and that of many Philistine lords.
Dave watched from afar. His friend was gone. But his calling remained. He had been anointed to lead with wisdom, not power humility, not pride. Where Simon's story ended in tragedy, Dave's path would rise, for he walked in the center of God’s will.
